Psych Club

Today, I had the honor to interview the Psych Club President Kailah M. Myrick. The Psychology Club is a club ran by Saint Martin’s University’s very own Psychology majors that strive to create a safe and fun environment with their club events. When asked about what their club’s overall goals are, Kailah said “bringing awareness to the SMU community by creating events that will give students a space to breathe and to bring awareness for mental health”. They plan do this by providing will help grad students and anyone else interested in finding paths with psychology.

This in itself is really fascinating as the club members are willing to help everyone wanting to know more about this field! As SMU Saints, their club goals line up with this year’s theme of “Year of Discovery” as they thrive to help students with different career goals. They will be holding events this semester, but dates are yet to be determined. One event that stood out during this interview is their “Mindfulness Event” which will be held sometime this semester.

When asked about the importance of self-care Kailah responded “the most important thing to do is take time for us and self-care. Self-care can be sleeping and reading books that are not for school. We want to influence our community to take time and make it easier on ourselves. It does not have to be expensive but do things that make us happy.”

Mental health is really important, and it can be scary when it’s hidden but with enough advocacy and assistance it can make a big difference.

Kailah Myrick, Psych Club President

Self-care was one of the workshops held by Campus Life in the beginning of the year and Kailah stands by the message of taking time for yourself is important as we know that many students work full time and go to school full time. You must allocate time to do things that make you happy. One thing she hopes for is for more students to join the club and participate in their club events, because it makes it more fun. She recounted their gingerbread house event from last semester’s turn out and mentioned it was so much fun having everyone come! Kailah encourages students to spread the word of their events when they see the fliers of club events coming up.

If you would like to join the club Kailah emphasized that everyone regardless of major can join the club and it is a great educational opportunity for the students on campus to learn about the importance of mental health awareness. The overall aim of this club is to bring that sense of community that falls with our Benedictine values, and it is an inspirational goal for many. If you have any questions regarding how to join or be more involved, you can email Kailah on her school email kailah.myrick@stmartin.edu or follow the Psych Club Instagram @smupsychclub.
