Sisterhood in Faith: A Catholic Group for Women at SMU

Written By: Anabelle Goodman

Have you ever wanted to join a group where you can share and grow in your faith? Women’s Spiritual Group at SMU might be the group for you! This group is a Catholic faith-based sharing group that is open to all the women students at SMU. Even though the majority of the members are Catholic women, this group is open to anyone looking to learn more about the Catholic faith.

Emily Alberts, the Program Manager for the Office of Campus Ministry, started this group at SMU because she wished that she had a group like this when she was attending here at Saint Martins.

“We have a Knights of Columbus group [at SMU] but it is for men, not women. The Knights of Columbus do have [a female auxiliary] women’s group called the Daughter of Isabella [that is a branch of the Knights of Columbus, but it is more prominent on the East Coast]” Alberts said.

Alberts, teamed up with Sister Paz, from the St. Placid Priory Women’s Benedictine Monastery. This Monastery is a women’s benedictine monastic community located right here in Lacey, Washington. Sister Paz also attends the weekly meetings every Thursday to co-teach with Emily and provide more insight into Scripture readings. St. Placid Priory Women’s Monastery and Saint Martin’s Monastery, have a withstanding relationship and work together on projects like this women’s group.

The meetings are weekly and involve a routine of prayer and Scripture readings. Lectio Divina is the practice of studying the Bible and analyzing what certain verses can mean relating to one’s faith and means “Divine Reading” in Latin.

“We get together every single week. This year we did Thursday nights. We start with a prayer called Lectio Divina,” Alberts said. “We take a piece of scripture and reflect on it. Then, we end by looking at different women in the Bible,”.
