Saint Martin’s University recently hosted its annual Homecoming event, bringing together students, alumni, and community members for a vibrant celebration of school spirit and athletic achievement. This year was especially remarkable, as Saint Martin’s women’s basketball team made it to the GNAC semifinals for the first time in 11 years. The success extended beyond basketball, with Jocelyn earning a gold medal and the men’s basketball team also delivering an outstanding performance. The momentum built this season leaves fans and athletes excited for what the future holds. The energy in the Pavilion was electric, with students and faculty cheering on their teams, creating an unforgettable atmosphere of unity and pride.
Among those recognized were student-athletes Kiana Rios and Jada Travis, two standout players who have left a significant mark on Saint Martin’s athletics. Kiana and Jada, alongside their teammates, demonstrated remarkable dedication and resilience throughout the season, proving themselves to be fierce competitors and invaluable team members. The men’s basketball team was also present to show their support, embodying the close-knit camaraderie that defines the Saint Martin’s sports community.
A Moment of Recognition
For Kiana Rios, being acknowledged during Homecoming was a moment of gratitude and reflection. “I was grateful for the recognition, but of course, I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. Being recognized alongside Jada made the feeling even better,” she shared. As a student-athlete, Kiana has learned the value of time management and dedication, realizing that with enough effort, anything is possible.
Jada Travis echoed similar sentiments, expressing how meaningful it was to be named Freshman of the Year and part of the All-Conference team.
“These awards really show my resiliency,” she said.
Just a few years ago, Jada was uncertain about continuing her basketball career. However, with the support of Coach Marlowe and her teammates, she found her love for the game again.
“Her belief in me was a big part of my success this season,” Jada noted, emphasizing the role of encouragement in her journey.
Both players have had an exceptional season, showcasing impressive stats and clutch performances in critical moments. Jada’s consistency in scoring, rebounding, and defensive play has made her a key asset to the team, while Kiana’s leadership on the court and ability to step up when needed has propelled the team to new heights.
The Homecoming Experience
The Homecoming event was a surreal experience for both athletes, as they witnessed the Saint Martin’s community come together in an electrifying atmosphere.
“The excitement and energy in the Pavilion meant the most to me. It’s always more fun playing in front of your home crowd,” Kiana said.
Jada, experiencing her first year at Saint Martin’s, was deeply touched by the support.
“Being a woman in sports, I feel like sometimes we don’t get the same attention as men’s teams, so it meant a lot for the community to show up and support us,” she remarked. The crowd’s energy fueled the team, making the experience all the more memorable.
What made this year’s Homecoming even more special was the overwhelming support from the men’s basketball team, who cheered from the sidelines, bringing an added level of encouragement to their female counterparts. This unity between teams reflects the culture of support and teamwork that Saint Martin’s has cultivated across all its athletic programs.
Athletics and Community Engagement
Beyond the games, Homecoming serves as an essential bridge connecting students, athletes, and alumni. For Kiana, the event is an opportunity to build lasting memories and strengthen the SMU fan base.
“We love our fans, especially the little campers who continue to show up at our games. Knowing that we are role models to future athletes means a lot to our team,” she shared. Alumni presence also adds a special touch, as former players return to support and share their experiences transitioning from college to their careers.
Jada emphasized the importance of the connections formed during Homecoming.
“Cheering for the men’s team allowed me to bond with people I might not have connected with otherwise. This support means everything to me and my team.”
The shared experiences and advice from alumni further enriched her perspective, making the event truly unforgettable.
Homecoming is more than just a celebration of athletic achievements; it’s a moment to recognize the dedication of student-athletes and the community that rallies behind them. The presence of alumni, fans, and fellow athletes highlights how sports at Saint Martin’s is not just about competition—it’s about family, support, and shared experiences that extend beyond the court.
Looking to the Future
As the season progresses, both athletes remain focused on their goals. Kiana believes the team has the potential to become conference champions and encourages younger athletes to stay determined.
“Never stop setting goals. Nothing is impossible if you put in the work. Love and support the people around you and cherish every moment.”
Jada is equally optimistic about the future. Although the team fell short in the championship game, she is confident in their ability to claim a title in the coming years.
Her message to aspiring athletes is clear: “Bet on yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too small or too slow. Hard work will take you anywhere you want to go. Celebrate the little victories and stay focused on the vision.”
A Legacy of Support and Determination
Saint Martin’s Homecoming is more than just a weekend of events; it is a celebration of perseverance, camaraderie, and school pride. As Kiana and Jada exemplify, the journey of a student-athlete is filled with challenges, but with dedication and a strong support system, success is within reach. The event not only honors achievements but also fosters a sense of belonging and inspiration for the next generation of Saints.
With such passion and determination, the future of Saint Martin’s athletics shines bright, promising many more unforgettable Homecoming celebrations to come. The commitment shown by these athletes, their coaches, and their fans ensures that the legacy of Saint Martin’s sports will continue to thrive for years to come.
